Do you want to be part of an organisation that fights for children every single day? Then join us as Humanitarian Operations Advisor, providing operational and strategic support to new and ongoing emergency responses around the world and influence the wider humanitarian sector.

In our Humanitarian department, we fight for children every single day. Through support to our country programmes in more than 50 countries around the world we work hard to protect children, give them a healthy start and the chance to learn.  We go the extra mile - and we don’t rest until the work is done. We also support new endeavours and partnerships across the humanitarian sector, making real changes for the future

As Humanitarian Operations Advisor, a key focus will be to provide operational and strategic support to new and ongoing emergency responses through ensuring high quality programming and funding, guiding and influencing decision-makers and providing effective information and communication management. In addition you will:

  • Line manage a group of individuals as well as project manage specific areas of work
  • Ensure effective and timely fundraising, award/grant management and donors relations, related to large and small emergency contexts, through oversight of a designated portfolio of humanitarian awards
  • Implement SCUK humanitarian strategy through advocating for allocation of flexible humanitarian funding and other resources
  • Train coach and develop members of the Humanitarian Operations Team to support to deliver quality humanitarian response within the SC movement, whilst supporting their development needs
  • Lead on development and/or revision of operational systems, procedures and guidelines ensuring these are fit-for-purpose for emergency response needs.

On this occasion we are looking for one advisor who has interests across the humanitarian sector including working on sector-wide projects as well as working remotely with country offices in a support role.   In addition, you will be expected to work flexibly within the team and work with a wide range of stakeholders.

To be successful you will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a field relevant to international development and/or humanitarian response. Significant experience of working in a senior management role in a complex country programme, emergency response or fragile state setting is essential, as is up-to-date knowledge on current humanitarian issues, such as application of humanitarian core principles and humanitarian quality frameworks (e.g. Sphere, CHS).   You must have substantial experience in award (grant/contract) management and experience of working with major institutional donors (such as DFID, ECHO, DEC etc.), and in influencing change at an operational and strategic level with a variety of stakeholders.

In addition, you will have:

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to work within a network of working groups and teams, and through a matrix management structure, both of which require very strong coordination and cooperation skills and behaviour.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to deal tactfully and sensitively with a wide range of people in a large and complex organisation, often at a distance
  • A willingness to travel up to 50% of the year, often at short notice and occasionally to remote and insecure locations
  • Have working level French, Spanish or Arabic as well as English

Please make sure your cover letter explains how you meet these essential requirements.

At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.

If you share our belief in the power of children, join the fight. It takes relentless determination, creativity and a real commitment to real change. Because every child should be able to make their mark on their world, and help to build a better future. We look forward to hearing from you.
