The Position
We are seeking a talented, creative, high-energy junior producer with a documentary background, strong research/journalistic skills, a keen visual sensibility, and shooting, editing, and design skills to help our team create unique short documentaries that have impact and bring under-reported human rights issues to light.
You will be part of a small multimedia team that works with Thomson Reuters Foundation’s award-winning team of journalists to create short documentaries and videos around their work on human rights, trafficking and slavery, development, climate change, and other humanitarian topics. The team also makes creative and engaging promotional/explanatory videos about the foundation and its work and for the Foundation’s conferences and awards.
You will be assisting the head of multimedia in research/development, production, post-production, logistics, and outreach; be involved with day-to-day production tasks related to our website and video channel; and help come up with and research local stories and keep track of ideas coming in from our journalists around the world. You will sometimes be expected to shoot and edit stories and interviews as part of a team or on your own.
Tasks will include detailed background research, finding potential characters, coordinating global shoot logistics, maintaining equipment, managing media, handling administrative tasks, assisting on shoots and in post-production, helping edit editorial and communications videos, conducting photo and video archive research, and working to build our video audience.
You should be technically competent in all aspects of production, from shooting and recording sound to lighting to post-production. You will have experience managing media, logging and pre-editing, and finishing videos for web export on Avid and FCP. Experience with photo-shop and aftereffects a plus. You should also have experience with photo and archive research, as we make extensive use of the Reuters archive. Photo research skills particularly appreciated.
You may be doing shoots on your own as per your skills: the ability to conduct interviews with insight and sensitivity and film observational scenes with confidence and discretion would be ideal.
You also will be responsible for daily production tasks related to trust.org, as well as outreach and social media for our video work.
Responsibilities
- Assist head of multimedia in daily production tasks and ongoing projects
- Find story ideas on a range of topics of interest to the Foundation
- Work with trust.org reporters outside of the UK to facilitate footage delivery, translations, etc.
- Assist with post-production tasks from logging and transcribing to syncing, converting, and pre-editing footage
- Research, source, and prep video and picture archive material
- Work with the communications team and other arms of the Foundation on promotional materials, conference materials, etc., including photo research
- Help develop new ways to present and distribute Foundation videos online and via social media for maximum impact
- Film interviews, events, and stories when requested
- Edit trust.org video content and promotional videos as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
The position requires experience working with established production companies or media outlets and a desire to make a real difference on humanitarian issues. Good communications skills (written and verbal) are essential. Experience shooting abroad is a big plus, as are additional languages. Driver’s license preferred. A track record of successful outreach campaigns and video promotion is highly desirable.
Skills:
At least one year professional production experience, ideally including shooting/editing credits; AP experience for established production company/broadcaster ideal- Able to meet deadlines and work under well pressure- Excellent communications (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; experience dealing with sensitive topics and gaining trust of contributors; understanding of ethics of journalism dealing with the disempowered- Experience finding stories and characters - Highly organised, able to keep track of many projects simultaneously- Self-starter, able to work individually and in teams- Experience working in fields of human rights, development, climate, and/or corruption an advantage- At least one language beyond English preferred- Experience building social media followings a major plus- University degree
