Part-time independent research consultants sought for media content analysis and interviews
1. Background
The Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, is seeking part-time independent research consultants to conduct media content analysis and interviews in the following countries/regions:
- Liberia
- Senegal
- South Africa
- Tanzania
- Uganda
- Any Arabic-speaking country in North Africa (including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt)
2. Scope of work
Each part-time research consultant will be required to work up to 20 person-days over a 30-month period, between now and the end of 2016.
Each consultant will be required to:
- Attend a three-day training workshop (likely between September and December 2014) in either Uganda or Senegal.
- Perform a content analysis of a week’s worth of news coverage from one or more news outlets
- Perform content analysis of up to 104 additional news items on an as-needed basis.
- Conduct a series of interviews with journalists and editors.
- Transcribe interviews verbatim, and produce summaries.
3. Deliverables
- Completed one-week content analysis for one or more media outlets (template to be provided)
- Completed content analysis of additional news items
- Audio recordings, transcripts and summaries of interviews with journalists and editors
4. Requirements
The Thomson Reuters Foundation is looking for individuals who are not practicing journalists, but who are familiar with the principles of good journalism. (Appropriate candidates might, for example, be teachers or professors of journalism, journalism students, or researchers who have conducted media content analysis before.)
Researchers must be fluent in either English or French. Please specify all languages you speak, and your level of fluency, when you apply.
Knowledge of business, finance and taxation issues and/or the oil and gas sector is an asset.
5. Reporting lines
The part-time independent research consultants will report to the external evaluator of the Programme.
6. Compensation
Compensation will be paid in instalments, which are deliverables-based. Payment details:
- $510 USD for training – to be delivered after first content analysis job is complete
- $10.50 USD per news item, to a maximum of $2100 USD (or 200 news items).
- Standard day rate for interviewing and content analysis: $170 USD
The maximum possible compensation is approximately $3000 USD but we cannot guarantee this sum for every consultant.
