Do you want to be part of an organisation that fights for children every single day? Then join us as Crisis Anticipation Officer, playing a key role in coordinating within the Anticipation unit as well as with Members and external stakeholders.

The Start Network is a global network of 42 national and international NGOs leading for change in humanitarian aid. Their aim is to deliver effective aid, harnessing the power and knowledge of the network to make faster and better decisions to help people affected by crises in an increasingly complex and uncertain world. They promote a way of working that reduces the power of centralised institutions and give more control to communities and individuals on the front line of crises. To realise this vision, they seek to create a humanitarian sector that is more diverse, decentralised and collaborate. Its programmes include the Start Fund (financing for rapid response to under-the-radar crises of unexpected spikes in humanitarian need); Start Engage (helping communities to prepare for the respond to crises); Start Response (collaboration and aggregation for large scale crises) and Start Labs (fostering innovation in the humanitarian sector). The Start Team is presently hosted by Save the Children UK on behalf of all the network’s member agencies, but is working towards independent status.

As Crisis Anticipation Officer, you will play an important role in the Anticipation Window which enables Start Network members to carry out advanced preparedness and/ or early actions using forecast information. You will also support the teams in the expansion of Start Network’s work on knowledge of forecast based early action, multilateral and networked coordination and humanitarian innovation. In addition you will support the Technical Adviser for Risk Analysis in tracking forecasting platforms & forecasting information providers and documenting them. In addition you will:

  • Support the Technical Adviser (Learning) on the dissemination and implementation of the departmental Learning Framework
  • Work with Fund Officers to support the Anticipation Alert cycle
  • Maintain a complete, accessible and updated filing and archiving system of all projects
  • Facilitate and strengthen knowledge management within and between both teams and work with Advisers to proactively identify potential areas of collaboration and overlap.

To be successful you will have a relevant academic qualification in the field of international humanitarianism/development, social/political science or other relevant subject area with proven project support skill set. Experience of working in a humanitarian or development organisation is essential, as is fluent written and spoken English with a permit to work in the UK. In addition you will have:

  • Experience of organising or helping to organise events
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including computer literacy and confidence in using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • An awareness of the challenges of distance support and cultural differences
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to work with people form a range of background and cultures
  • Experience of general administrative work in an office environment.
