Psychosocial Support Project ManagerBangui, Central African Republic

 

We are looking for a highly qualified Psychosocial Support Project Manager for Bangui, Capital city  of the Central African Republic (CAR).

Who are we?

Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has operated in C.A.R since 2007. DRC has recently scaled up its emergency activities in its areas of operation to respond to the growing needs of displaced and other conflict-affected populations. Besides immediate assistance, DRC has launched Social Cohesion projects both in Bangui and in several CAR provincial Prefectures in order to address root causes of the conflict and the increasing divide between communities. The Psychosocial Support Project will come as an essential complementary component to the Social Cohesion approach.

DRC Community Psychosocial Support approach in CAR encompasses the following elements:

  • Listening centres and hotlines
  • Facilitation of psycho-education sessions for community members, through awareness raising sessions and theater shows.
  • Facilitation of support groups.
  • Facilitation of psychosocial support workshops for children.
  • Support community based healing activities (including support to traditional mourning ceremonies).

About the job

You will have, with the support of the Social Cohesion and Protection Coordinators, the overall function of providing technical and managerial advice, support, training and oversight to the national programme staff (i.e. the Facilitators working in and with communities) on programmatic issues within the Project and potentially other Social Cohesion and Protection projects. A key element of this is to develop staff capability to carry out assigned tasks and responsibilities.

The objective is to develop the capacity and technical knowledge of the national staff within DRC in order to ensure that operational guidelines are followed and sustainable supervision and management capacity is developed within the organization.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Psychosocial Support Project Manager is responsible for the overall management, monitoring and reporting of his/her assigned project. This includes:

Project Management

  • Train, mentor, monitor, advice and supervise the national programme staff in the assigned sections, ensuring that they carry out their duties and responsibilities in accordance with their job descriptions and the project guidelines and objectives.
  • Ensure that all activities are implemented according to the set plan of action.
  • Train and mentor staff on relevant technical skills such as psychological first aid, facilitation of support groups and facilitation of psycho-education sessions and psychosocial support guided workshops.
  • Follow global guidance such as IASC guidelines of mental health and psycho-social support in emergencies and relevant WHO guidelines
  • Carry out PSS situational assessments in targeted areas of operation to identify psycho-social and mental health needs and existing coping mechanisms, including identification of traditional healers and religious support that address mental health problems.

Stakeholder relations

  • Liaise with local authorities, external partners, non-state armed groups if necessary within his/her assigned areas of responsibility and coordinate with the Country Director and senior national staff.

Reporting

  • Assist national staff in the timely and quality compilation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports for their specific sections in line with back donor requirements and DRC reporting standards

Admin/HR

  • Monitor admin and HR aspects of his/her assigned sections; including monitoring the discipline and welfare of the project staff and ensuring that the correct level of staff capacity is maintained.
  • Line-manage the assigned senior national staff. The Social Cohesion Project Manager will also coach and mentor the senior national staff in management skills in relation to their teams.

Finance

  • The Social Cohesion Project Manager is responsible for monitoring of the financial aspects of the activities in his/her assigned sections.

About you

To be successful in this role you must have:

Qualifications

  • University Degree, preferably Master’s in Psychology, Social work, Anthropology, Sociology, Pedagogy or other relevant fields.
  • Minimum of 3 years working experience at an international level with humanitarian international NGOs or operational UN agencies
  • Minimum of 1 year field experience in conflict affected areas,
  • Proven experience in project management, including budget management, reporting, staff management and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Proven of knowledge and use of IASC MHPSS guidelines
  • Proven experience in implementing community based psychosocial support activities
  • Proven experience in training staff and volunteers on psychological first aid, psycho-education and group facilitation technics
  • Fluent in French and English, oral and written
  • High degree of computer literacy
  • Previous experience in Psychosocial Support Programming.

  • Strong training, facilitation and mentoring skills.
  • Political and cultural sensitivity, including ability to adapt well to local cultures and guide conflict sensitive programming.
  • Proven ability to function well in an unstable and restricted environment.
  • Innovative and creative thinking.
  • Analytical and reporting skills.

We offer

DRC will offer the successful applicant a 5 months contract, with possible extension dependent on both funding and performance. You must be available to start work as soon as possible and be willing and able to work in Bangui, CAR. This is a ‘non-family duty station’ and the person must be prepared to live and work in an isolated and unstable security environment with limited recreational and social facilities. Accommodation is provided. You are expected to spend around 40-50% of your time in the field.
