We are looking for a charismatic, influential and determined Humanitarian Gender Equality Advisor, who will lead the systematic integration of gender equality into strategic, technical and operational processes to meet Save the Children’s quality standard for our humanitarian programming to be gender-sensitive at minimum, and gender-transformative where possible.

Our Humanitarian department integrates emergency and development work, through our country programmes. It increases our capacity to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

As Humanitarian Gender Equality Advisor you will play a critical role in ensuring humanitarian sectors are able to deliver quality programming, through ensuring gender is a key part of the design and delivery of their work.  You will provide technical assistance in the development of high quality concept notes and proposalsand provide strategic leadership on advancing gender equality across our humanitarian portfolio.. You will be deployed as a technical advisor to medium or large-scale prioritised emergencies to support the design and integration of gender equality targeted actions, to lead on gender mainstreaming throughout the humanitarian response as well as build staff and partner capacity.  In addition you will:

  • Provide technical advice to mainstream gender in Save the Children’s humanitarian responses
  • Contribute to the creation of robust gender sensitive MEAL frameworks Lead on the delivery of approaches focusing on gender equality, with a view to improving the quality and scale of interventions
  • Engage in advocacy to address gender equality issues and gaps
  • Monitor and evaluate essential standards for gender equality by implementation of SC’s gender equality marker and the production of an annual gender equality marker report
  • Be up to date on relevant global policy and programming relating to gender equality within and beyond the SC movement
  • Facilitate inductions and training on gender equality and support the gender equality champions.

To be successful you will have substantial direct humanitarian experience of gender mainstreaming or gender programming, ideally first phase or in a non-protracted setting, as this is a one of a kind role in the Humitarian Technical Unit and the successful candidate will need to have the confidence and ability to take the lead. You will have a good understanding of child rights programming and human rights based approaches. In addition you will have:

  • Strong experience of influencing and creating change around gender sensitive/transformative programming at field and global level in humanitarian settings
  • The ability to build effective relationships with and influence people from diverse backgrounds and different levels of seniority
  • Experience conducting humanitarian assessments - including gender analysis through the use of participatory methodologies - and revising monitoring and evaluation tools to capture gender equality considerations for different sectors
  • Expert knowledge of a broad range of gender equality programmatic interventions
  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal, and the ability to present arguments clearly and effectively to a wide range of internal and external audiences.
