The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home.

Health programs represent the largest single sector within which IRC currently operates, constituting approximately 45% of the international budget and with activities in 22 countries. Field-based health staff are supported by a headquarters Health Unit comprised of health professionals with many years of experience in humanitarian work. The Health Unit contributes to the effectiveness and comprehensiveness of IRC primary health care programs through technical support, staff development, and institutional learning. The Health Unit ensures quality programs by promoting self-reliance, participation, sustainability, equity, and human dignity. The Health Unit is committed to the development of the field of humanitarian assistance through advocacy, documentation of lessons learned and research.

The IRC is leading a multi-agency program of operational research to develop a combined protocol for the treatment of severe and moderate acute malnutrition. The IRC is recruiting a Senior Coordinator for Nutrition Research to guide stage 1 of the research. Stage 1 involves the collection and input of patient cards from Outpatient Therapeutic Feeding Programs (OTPs) and Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programs (TSFPs) in approximately 6 country programs into a centralized database, analysis of the data and reporting on key research questions to help design the protocol. The research is funded by OFDA and IRC is leading a consortium of partners including Action Against Hunger-USA and Harvard School of Public Health.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Senior Coordinator for Nutrition Research, as part of the IRC Nutrition team, is responsible for overall supervision of the research program, including coordinating with partners in the consortium, ensuring high quality data entry and analysis in cooperation with IRC and ACF field teams and Harvard School of Public Health, providing technical support to field teams when questions and concerns arise, and adhering to donor requirements. Although field travel is not expected, some short-term travel may be necessary depending on field team needs. Priority will be given to those who can be based in IRC’s New York office, although consideration will be given to qualified candidates outside New York, particularly given the short-term nature of the position. Dates of position: December 1, 2014- April 15, 2015.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide overall supervision and technical guidance to the program of research
  • Coordinate with research consortium partners, including arranging regular meetings and liaising with partner point persons to ensure adherence to the stage 1 timeline and deadlines
  • Provide technical support to field teams to ensure the highest quality data collection and data entry
  • Coordinate grant management support through the IRC health unit and ensure adherence to donor requirements
  • Ensure the research budget is maintained and updated as activities progress
  • Liaise with the expert task force by providing regular updates and convening meetings as necessary to seek feedback
  • Support the IRC and partners in pursuing additional funding for the research
  • Provide support to the IRC nutrition team and country programs, including writing and reviewing proposals, designing assessments and M&E systems, and answering technical questions.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least three years experience in the coordination and implementation of nutrition research programs in developing countries
  • Experience coordinating a team and incorporating inputs from diverse partners
  • Proficiency in nutrition data analysis and database management
  • Ability to write clear and effective communications and reports
  • Experience with CMAM and IYCF programs
  • PhD or Masters degree in public health nutrition, or related degree (nutrition, public health, epidemiology)
  • Willingness to travel to the field to provide targeted support to field teams
