What is an HSP?

Oxfam has a large team of HSPs covering many disciplines who bring their skills and experience to Oxfam’s country teams to help them respond to conflicts and natural disasters. HSPs are based at home and would expect to spend up to nine months a year in field programmes (pro rata for part time posts) usually spending a minimum of three months on any one deployment, Many of our current emergency programmes are in Africa, the Middle East and Asia

What will you be doing as an HSP Public Health promoter?

As a Public Health promoter, your role will be to help communities engage with our Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion interventions often working in conjunction with our Food Security and Protection teams. You’ll lead a team of national and international staff to assess the public health risks faced by affected communities and together with our engineers, you will design, implement and monitor a programme to meet their needs. As you improve your understanding of local socio - cultural norms and beliefs you will use your skills and creativity to communicate with communities and motivate them, adapting Oxfam’s response to the context and ensuring as far as possible that communities views and perspectives influence programme outcomes. Building the skills of others is an inherent part of this role.

What are we looking for?

With a graduate qualification in Social Sciences, Anthropology, Environmental or Public Health or related disciplines, you’ll meet the academic requirements of the role. You’ll have firsthand experience of working with communities e.g in Community Development, health outreach or WaSH, in at least one country other than your own. Ideally, some of this experience will have been in emergency response, you’ll also be confident in people management and capacity building, have strong communications skills and bring a collaborative approach to your work, along with sensitivity to cultural differences and the ability to work in a whole range of cultural contexts. Fluent English is essential and knowledge of another language, e.g French, Spanish or Arabic, is highly desirable.
