The position
We are seeking a talented, high-energy, experienced reporter with excellent news judgment, strong writing skills, and experience in mining and analysing data to produce exclusive investigative stories on corruption in aid and development, human rights, trafficking and slavery, climate change and other humanitarian topics. You will be UK-based, though other locations may be considered for the right candidate, and you will work with the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s award-winning global news team to produce unique stories that have impact and bring under-reported human rights issues to light.

Your focus will be on producing exclusive news angles on topical stories and to work on medium to long-term projects that you initiate research and write. You will work with our journalists and freelancers around the world, sharing knowledge on data mining, researching legal documents, using freedom of information to build strong evidence for ground-breaking stories.

Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and conduct thorough investigations into a range of stories of interest to the Foundation using various tools from data dives to freedom of information laws and legal documents
  • Write and research stories that highlight new angles on under-reported stories and break new ground
  • Work independently on stories and help reporters, the Foundation multi-media team, and freelancers on unique long and short term projects
  • Help develop new ways to present and distribute Foundation stories online and via social media for maximum impact
  • Develop and work with sources to produce unique content 
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills:

  • At least 10 years journalism experience, including a proven track record of breaking exclusive stories by using in-depth investigative techniques
  • Strong writer, able to meet deadlines and work under well pressure
  • Excellent numeracy skills; experience mining and analysing data; familiarity with using online and other resources for investigations; advanced Internet search techniques 
  • Highly organised, self starter and strong team player
  • Experience writing about human rights, development and corruption an advantage
  • Languages are a major plus
  • Experience building social media followings preferred
  • Multi-media skills in audio and video production a plus
  • University degree


This position is based in London although other locations may be considered. The salary is negotiable according to qualifications. The deadline for applications is Nov. 21.
