  • Independent Journalism - for the past thirty years we have been training journalists and media professional, improving the standards of journalism around the world. We also build platforms for independent journalism like Aswat Masriya, an independent and unbiased political news website launched in Egypt in 2011. 
  • Under-reported stories - our growing team of journalists covers the stories other media won’t cover with an emphasis on humanitarian relief, corruption, women’s rights and climate change.

The position

Building on the vast experience of the Foundation training journalists and media professionals, we are recruiting now for an exceptional individual who can take to the next level the work that we do to promote independent journalism. We want to think bigger and bolder and we need a fantastic candidate to lead that effort.

Reporting to the CEO of the Foundation, the Director of Journalism and Media will:

  • Design and implement an ambitious strategy for the Foundation to take to the next level what we do to support independent journalism 
  • Manage a team of 8 people based in London and Lisbon, together with a vast network of training consultants throughout the world. Projects managed by this team currently involve training journalists, media and communications professionals, and the development of platforms like Aswat Masriya in Egypt or The Source in Zimbabwe. 
  • Lead on all high level business development and fundraising efforts. The activities carried out in this team are funded both by Foundation’s resources and through support from other organizations and for profit clients. 

The ideal candidate

  • The ideal candidate would be have demonstrated and in-depth understanding of journalism internationally, of the conditions that make possible independent journalism, and of the latest innovations in the field 
  • You will have extensive relevant experience and may have been a journalist, have worked in the media business and/or media development world 
  • You have a commercial mind, and have a strong drive to spot and seize new business opportunities. You are ready to innovate and are not afraid of change 
  • Ideally, you will have some experience in fundraising and/or leading revenue generating teams and projects
  • You will have an excellent network in the media world, ideally across all the private sector, government and civil society 
  • An excellent manager and team leader, you will have the capacity to inspire and to lead an international team 
  • You will have excellent planning, project management and organisational skills, including the ability to deliver to multiple priorities whilst retaining a thorough attention to detail
  • The ideal candidate will be available to travel internationally and regularly 
  • You will be an excellent writer and editor, outstanding communicator with excellent spoken and written English. Proficiency in other languages is a strong advantage
