THE POSITION

We are seeking a talented, high-energy editor and project manager with expertise in climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and development, to manage an externally funded four-year project aimed at improving resilience to climate change impacts, particularly in Africa’s Sahel. The editor and project manager will work with the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s award-winning multi-media news team to manage the project website, work with reporters in the field, edit news stories and blogs, liaise with partners and funders, organise events and training programmes and produce project plans and report. The position will be based in London, though other locations, particularly Nairobi or Dakar, will be considered for the right candidate.

If you are excited about working for an international news organisation and you want to have impact, this could be the job for you. This position would suit an experienced project manager and editor who is keen to put his or her energy and expertise into making a real difference. Fluency in English and French is essential, and other African or Asian languages would be a plus. You must also be comfortable representing the Foundation internally and externally while building and managing relationships with partners and funders. The job will involve some travel. You will report to the head of climate programmes at the Foundation.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage donor-funded project and liaise on a daily basis with project partners in London, Africa and Asia
  • Write plans and reports in cooperation with partner organisations
  • Edit blogs and news stories in English and French
  • Work with freelance reporters in Africa and Asia to generate and develop story ideas, plan reporting trips, manage safety of reporters and edit stories
  • Run project website
  • Help develop training materials and deliver training
  • Build social media presence for project
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills:

  • Highly organised, strong team player, able to work effectively and efficiently with a wide range of partners, including partners abroad and in other organizations
  • Self-starter, able to meet deadlines and show grace under pressure
  • Strong writer with at least three years experience as a journalist and proven track record writing about climate change and development issues
  • Experience managing donor-funded projects and putting together project reports
  • Demonstrated understanding of climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction issues
  • Experience working with NGO partners preferred
  • Experience working in the developing world, particularly Africa or Asia, or experience running remote teams in those regions preferred
  • Fluent spoken and written French, able to edit effectively in French
  • Additional languages an advantage, particularly Arabic, Kiswahili, Burmese, Amharic or Nepalese
  • Experience building social media followings
  • Experience with web production preferred
  • University degree
  • Multi-media skills in audio and video production a plus
  • Journalism training experience a plus
