A powerful earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April, levelling buildings and causing a significant number of casualties. Humanitarian needs are significant, coupled with operational challenges of delivering aid on the ground. As of 28 April at least 5,057 people have died and more than 50,000 have been injured. 2.8 million children have been affected and 940,000 are in need of urgent aid (The extent of the damage is still unclear in remote areas, which remain cut off or difficult to access. 39 districts have been affected in the Western and Central Regions.  According to the Government of Nepal (GoN), 30 out of the country’s 75 districts in the Western and Central Regions have been affected. This includes mountain and hilly areas with disperse rural populations as well as some very densely populated districts and Nepal’s two largest cities – greater Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Save the Children’s origins lie in emergency response and it has remained central to our work ever since. Our approach integrates our emergency and development work, through the medium of our country programmes, which we expect to have the expertise for both types of work. Save the Children is responding to the crisis with an integrated programme of Shelter/NFIs, Health, Child Protection, WASH, Nutrition, Food Security, Education and cash interventions; aiming to reach up to 1 million people.
