Country Director, Chad

The total salary package for this position is £48,960 - £53,424 per annum* (circa $78,300 - $85,500 USD) including basic salary, hardship allowance, programme management allowance and cost of living allowance.

About MAG:

MAG saves lives and builds futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury for civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development. MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our work to ban landmines. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict.

About the Chad Programme:

Following nearly 30 years of conflict, large areas of Chad remain affected by mines and the explosive remnants of war. MAG worked in Chad from 2006 to 2013, aiming to improve the living conditions of communities affected by these items, so they can raise their families and pursue their livelihoods in a safe and secure environment, free from fear of death or injury. We are now planning on returning to Chad to re-open our programme and we are looking to recruit a new Country Director.

About the role:

This role will provide you with the opportunity to use your project and people management skills, leading a diverse team of international and national staff operating across a geographically varied environment. You will have the opportunity to use your skills in business development to network and interact with donor and other stakeholders and be responsible for the delivery of MAG’s work in a complex and challenging context. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced project or programme manager to challenge themselves, working in a senior leadership role within the organisation. Based in Ndjamena and reporting to the Regional Programmes Manager at MAG HQ, the Country Director will need to work independently, pro-actively and across a broad range of activities as the Senior Manager in country.

About you:

The successful candidate will need excellent programme management skills with experience of overseeing other staff working in programme support and delivery functions. To do this, you will need experience of working in a similar context, and the ability to work independently in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Previous experience of effectively delivering EC funded projects would be highly advantageous but not essential. You will need to be able to communicate with colleagues and stakeholders in French and English; therefore the successful candidate will need to be fluent in French and have a professional working knowledge of English. This is a high-profile position that will require excellent liaison and diplomacy skills. Previous experience of being responsible for a programme in a challenging political, logistical and security environment would also be highly advantageous.

Funding for this position will start on the 1st October and candidates should be available on or close to this date.
