We are looking for and experienced individual as the Clinical Lead for our Emergency Health Unit, you will manage the clinical lead of the East and Southern Africa team primary team providing technical leadership for the team and direct clinical care.

Our Humanitarian department integrates emergency and development work, through our country programmes. It increases our capacity to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

Save the Children’s origins lie in emergency response. The Emergency Health Unit (EHU) is an operational team deployed to support the Save the Children Humanitarian Health, Nutrition, HIV and WASH Strategy in providing and improving humanitarian responses. The EHU holds a pre-standing emergency health capacity to deploy in the event of a major disaster, diseases outbreak or conflict that affects population health and they will be set up within 72 hours of the disaster or identified emergency.

As ESA Clinical Lead you will provide technical leadership for the team and direct clinical care in high quality health interventions in some of the hardest places to work, where the needs for children are greatest.  You will supervise the clinical team and ensuring adherence to clinical protocols during EHU emergency responses. You will contribute to country emergency preparedness plans and programmes to prepare for emergency health deployments whilst provide clinical input to emergency preparedness. In addition you will:

  • Experience in working in treatment centres/units particularly Cholera Treatment centres, Ebola/ haemorrhagic fever and/or other infectious diseases
  • Experience of and commitment to working through systems of community participation and accountability
  • Strong experience of health management in public health humanitarian settings including previous first phase emergency response experience.
  • Experience of preparing successful funding proposals for donors
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.

To be successful you will be a Medical Doctor with Global Public Health experience, have experience in both primary and secondary health care including epidemic response, prevention and treatment, mass vaccination. You should have experience in managing multi-disciplinary medical teams and working with national and international health actors. In addition you will:

  • Ability to work both in an advisory and a hands-on implementation capacity
  • Experience of preparing successful funding proposals for donors
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy

We offer a comprehensive benefits package including a hardship allowance and, when applicable, an expensive posting allowance, 35 days annual leave, accommodation on deployment, comprehensive business travel insurance, up to £500 a year for routine medical treatment in addition to the insurance  and long term saving plan with 3% employee/ 5% of gross salary employer contribution.
