The Organization

Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is an international non-profit organization that promotes peaceful resolution of conflict. With headquarters in Washington, DC, and a European office in Brussels, Belgium, SFCG’s mission is to transform how individuals, organizations, and governments deal with conflict – away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. SFCG seeks to help conflicting parties understand their differences and act on their commonalities.

With a total of approximately 500 staff worldwide, SFCG implements projects in 36 countries. SFCG’s programs are in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, and the United States.

The Position

The Conflict Sensitivity Specialist will support a UNICEF-SFCG partnership aiming to increase the capacity of local communities and key stakeholders from the education system to promote peace in vulnerable regions of Burundi. Combining project management skills with technical expertise in monitoring and evaluation, the Specialist will work with project staff to coordinate training workshops on conflict sensitivity, Do No Harm and conflict mapping, organize technical support missions to build the capacity of local partners, and oversee quarterly conflict ”scans” in seven provinces in close collaboration with UNICEF. This position reports directly to the Country Director with support from SFCG’s Institutional Learning Team (ILT). The Conflict Sensitivity Specialist will be joining a highly motivated staff with a good team spirit and there will be opportunities to grow in the role.

Responsibilities

Project Management

• Coordinate data collection for the “conflict scans” in collaboration with UNICEF, and provide an analysis of the evolution of conflict dynamics in Burundi every quarter.
• Develop training curriculum and facilitate training workshops on conflict sensitivity, Do No Harm and conflict mapping for project beneficiaries, ensuring the highest training quality standards.
• Lead support missions to build the capacity of local partners in conflict sensitivity and Do No Harm.
• Ensure the quality of narrative reports and the timely submission of those reports to the donor.

Monitoring and Evaluation

• Provide leadership in the development of monitoring systems (e.g. the development of indicators, M&E plans, data collection tools, evidence-based processes, and knowledge management plans).
• Lead implementation of the project baseline, and coordinate on-going monitoring based on the indicators and objectives outlined in the project’s Logical Framework and other project documents.
• Produce a case study of the project documenting successes and lessons learned.
• Conduct trainings and provide technical support to build the M&E capacity of program staff and implementing partners, in coordination with the SFCG ILT.

As job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position-holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Essential:

• Bachelor’s degree in design, monitoring and evaluation; media development; conflict resolution; international relations; international development or related field (Master’s degree is preferred);
• Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in design, monitoring and evaluation methodologies, preferably in the field of conflict resolution/peacebuilding.
• At least two (2) years of field-based data collection and analysis experience;
• Demonstrated technical capacity to provide support and guidance to project staff on design, monitoring and evaluation;
• Experience in designing M&E methodologies and tools and the ability to coach and train others in their use;
• Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, as well as the ability to conduct professional relationships;

• Able to work independently and effectively in a team environment;
• Detail-oriented and highly organized, with a proactive approach;
• Ability to multi-task and work to meet tight deadlines;
• Excellent ability to communicate effectively in English and French, both verbally and in writing.

Desirable:

• Experience working in a conflict resolution setting.
• Basic familiarity with UNICEF programming such Communications for Development (C4D) and the Peacebuilding, Education and Advocacy Programme (PBEA) 
• Knowledge of Statistical tools such as SPSS.
• Basic familiarity with OECD DAC Criteria of Evaluating Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding programming.
