Purpose of the Job
Oxfam WASH programs are deployed in more than 50 countries around the world, and works in rural and urban areas, in camps for refugees and displaced persons, and within host communities. Oxfam work covers the diversity of contexts in which people are vulnerable to WASH-related disease and under-development: cyclical and acute natural disasters (earthquakes, flooding , tropical cyclones and hurricanes), slow onset emergencies (eg drought), conflict and political unrest and Complex situations encompassing a mixture of these factors, such as urban slums.
Oxfam is looking for a Public Health Engineer (Watsan) to be part of Oxfam Global Humanitarian Team (GHT) as an Humanitarian Support Professional (HSP). The GHT aims to play the lead role internationally in delivering high-quality WaSH programs to achieve maximum impact on the health and well-being of communities affected by emergencies, across the globe as rapid deployment team.
The Public Health Engineer position will work for the whole Oxfam confederation. The position involves immediate deployment, for up to 6 months in the 1st phase of emergencies.
This is an opportunity to carry out Water and Sanitation assessments and identify actions to cover Watsan needs in order to provide an efficient and rapid humanitarian response while evaluating Public Health risks related to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene practices and assess emergency needs, as requested, especially taking in the broader perspective of WASH and carry out the selection, design and construction of water systems, using ground water or surface water, including abstraction, storage, treatment and distribution for new systems or rehabilitation of existing systems.
We are looking for a person with a suitable qualification in a discipline related to Public Health Engineering andproven practical experience in humanitarian responses in appropriate water supplies, sanitation and hygiene promotion. It is desirable that most of this should have been in large scale emergency relief programmes.
A good working knowledge of English, and French or Spanish is required.
