A U.S.-led invasion toppled the country's leader, Saddam Hussein, in 2003, unleashing a ferocious insurgency that killed tens of thousands of civilians.

Fighting in Iraq has spiralled again this year, and many fear a return to the sectarian violence that tore the country apart between 2006 and 2008 and displaced millions of people.

Before the invasion, Iraqis had suffered decades of dictatorship, war and international sanctions. Despite huge oil reserves, the economy was crippled and its infrastructure shattered.
