  1. Business News and Tracking Down Corruption

Fear not!  Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Mediacentar Sarajevo bring you the chance to understand the basics of how money really DOES make the world go around.

    And while we’re explaining to you how it all works, we’ll also show you where to look to find those nasty little corruption stories that lurk hidden in the numbers. Join us for Business News and Tracking Down Corruption, 15-19 October in Sarajevo. No financial experience necessary, just a keen interest in learning about this exciting and fast-paced part of journalism.

  2. Economic and Political Reporting from Southeast Europe

    In 2012, 16 journalists from the Balkans are competitively chosen to participate in the programme, managed by experienced staff from Thomson Reuters Foundation and Robert Bosch Stiftung. The programme includes two 10-day training courses in London, UK (12-26 May) and in Berlin, Germany (23 September – 6 October) run by skilled ex-Reuters journalists. Participants will also travel to Brussels and Frankfurt to meet policy-makers and journalists covering European financial and political affairs.

    The course will cover the following broader topics:

    • Writing about emerging market economies
    • Markets reporting and covering companies
    • Practical exercises based on current European themes
  3. Writing and Reporting News

    The core activity concerns the actual writing and reporting of news, as practiced by Reuters and other global agencies. Practical exercises form the core of the programme, with an emphasis on improving basic reporting and writing skills including accuracy, impartiality, speed, clarity and structure. The course will help journalists recognise their good habits and provide them the time and space to work on their weak points, within a mentored framework.

  4. Writing Financial and Business News

    The course combines face-to-face teaching with online study. It starts with five days in London followed by online study made up of ten modules.  It is anticipated each online unit will take about two weeks to complete and the modules can be completed in less than ten months.

  6. Reporting Crises and Disasters

    The core activity concerns the challenges and techniques involved in covering international-scale crises and disasters, using Reuters and other world news organisations as a model. We will concentrate on natural disasters and humanitarian crises of all sorts, and the special problems that can arise in covering them. Through briefings and practical writing exercises against deadlines, the course will help journalists improve their skills and recognise problem areas, within an interactive group environment. The Thomson Reuters Foundation AlertNet service (www.alertnet.org) will provide a central resource during the course.

    Thomson Reuters Foundation invites journalists to apply to take part in a major three-day seminar in Istanbul, Turkey from 12 – 14 November 2012. "Reporting on Terrorism and Global Security" will bring together security experts, authoritative commentators and journalists for a series of lively presentations and debates.

    The seminar will look critically at the role of the media and how journalists can avoid being exploited by terrorists to help them achieve their goals. Themes will include: fragile states; the Arab Spring and its impact on al Qaeda and Islamist political parties; the impact of turmoil in Libya and Syria on the security of Europe, Middle East and Africa; the impact of European economic turmoil on extremism; the risk of popular unrest in Russia and China; Nuclear proliferation and Iran; Pakistan’s challenges; cybersecurity and espionage; reporting in the age of social media and WikiLeaks; and anticipating security challenges of the future. Panels will be complemented by a practical workshop exercise and a newsmaker session.
