Ten Commandments of Communicating about people with Intellectual Disabilities

PDF: Ten Commandments of Communicating about people with Intellectual Disabilities
Source: Special Olympics
14 February 2012

A multinational attitudinal survey conducted by Special Olympics shows that nearly 70% of persons with ID have the capacity to function at much higher levels that society’s perception allow or encourage.

Conscious of the powerful role of the media, Special Olympics have developed language guidelines for journalists writing or speaking about people with ID to ensure that all people are portrayed with individuality and dignity.

The guidelines demonstrate how language can break down the barriers to acceptance and inclusion.

Special Olympics is an international organization that changes lives through the power of sport by encouraging and empowering people with intellectual disabilities, promoting acceptance for all, and fostering communities of understanding and respect worldwide.
