Tips for journalistsHints and tips for better journalism
Being a journalism or media trainer compares unfavourably to being a journalist in one key way – the lack of colleagues to turn to for help. For Thomson Reuters trainers (most of whom learned our journalism skills at the coalfaces of bureaus around in the world, in the middle of the night, when the speed of breaking news was making us wonder why we hadn’t listened to our mothers and become lawyers) the camaraderie and mutual support of the newsroom is something we still miss.
Sometimes you want to check the latest best practice, or see if someone else knows an easy way of explaining a key issue – or even borrow an exercise from an expert in an area which your own course touches on. This section of resources aims to provide that support system, where you can find anything from a quick tip-sheet on headlines, to a complicated multi-day writing exercise. Of course, in the best traditions of journalism (and training!), it’s a great place to share the material you produce. It’s not quite a virtual-newsroom – but it’s a place to go before you start re-inventing the training wheel.
