Do you want to play a key role in an organisation which stands up for children? Join Save the Children as an Emergency Health Unit (EHU) Paediatrician and provide and support inpatient and outpatient paediatric services in humanitarian crisis settings.

In our Humanitarian department, we fight for children every single day. We integrate emergency and development work, through our country programmes. We increase our capacity to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. We go the extra mile - and we don’t rest until the work is done.

As EHU Paediatrician you will provide both direct medical care and technical leadership, supervising a multi-disciplinary clinical team. You will provide paediatric consultations, treatment, and follow up services according to internationally accepted standards, conducting daily rounds on patients, initiating case discussions and monitoring and documenting patient progress. Competent at managing all paediatric emergencies, you will advise if further testing or advanced care is required and initiate the referral process. In addition you will:

  • Ensure referral systems are established and adhered to and that staff are fully aware and use the protocols
  • Ensure notifiable disease reporting and follow-up system is used if required
  • Collect and analyse medical service data to adjust project objectives and activities as needed
  • Provide technical support with proposal development, concept notes and internal and external reports and evaluations.

To be successful you will have current clinical experience of at least 3 years, with specialist paediatric experience of ST5 or equivalent. You will have full GMC or Irish Medical Council Registration or a transcript of training, with at least 2 years post registration experience in acute general medicine or accident and emergency.  You will be adaptable and self-motivated with a minimum of three months’ work volunteering in developing countries, as well as experience of training and supervising clinical staff. In addition you will have:

  • Advanced life support, paediatric life support and neonatal life support training
  • The ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively, alongside political and cultural sensitivity
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances with limited resources
  • Previous experience of NGO work in humanitarian settings
  • Diploma level of training in tropical medicine and/or infectious disease (desirable).

The post holder must be willing to deployed at short notice (<72 hrs) for up to three months at a time.

At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.

If you share our belief in the power of children, join the fight. It takes relentless determination, creativity and a real commitment to real change. Because every child should be able to make their mark on their world, and help to build a better future. We look forward to hearing from you.
