Diversity and Resilience in a Rapidly Changing World

Change, for better or worse, is a fact of life for each and every one of us. It takes many forms. To some, it offers hope. To others, it’s a threat, a source of fear, anger or anxiety.

For you, as a professional journalist, change, in whatever form, is likely to be your next story.

This workshop, from 25-31 August 2018 in the unique setting of the Austrian Alps, will help you look more closely at the impact of rapid technological and social change on the lives of communities back home.

It is an opportunity for you to join and inform the debate on the way forward and to encourage your readers, listeners and viewers to join that debate and make their voices heard.

Each year, the forum brings together thinkers from across the generational and ideological divide in Europe to network and explore the challenges and potential solutions. Since it was established in 1945, the Forum has welcomed speakers such as Theodor W. Adorno, Karl Popper, Indira Gandhi, Friedrich von Hayek, Hans Kelsen, Ban Ki-Moon (who will participate in 2018 again), Jeffrey Sachs, Saskia Sassen, Yannis Varoufakis.  This year, the following speakers will take part: Joseph Stiglitz, Talia Sasson, Anya Schiffrin, Eric Rosenbach and Stephen Sackur.

During the workshop, we will look back at the unintended consequences of the Industrial or Green Revolutions and forward to the likely consequences of the digital, genetic and technological revolutions.

We will explore what diversity and resilience mean in relation to topics that make headlines on a daily basis.

Tariffs versus free trade. National identity versus globalisation. Strong leadership versus strong institutions. How stable is the world’s climate? How can innovation help? How stable is the global economy? Can communities cope with the pace of change?

In a world driven by vested interests, this workshop offers you a chance to discover WHO might be doing WHAT to WHOM, WHY and HOW, and WHO are, or should be, the gatekeepers.

Who is managing the world’s financial system? Who benefits? Is economic migration a good thing? Will the Sustainable Development Goals embraced by world leaders in 2015 offer sustainable development for all?

You will have access to the Forum’s Political, Legal, Economic and Financial Symposia, a mix of innovators, policy makers and drivers of change with differing perspectives who will help you dig deeper.

Whether your interest is food or farming, drug abuse or drug resistance, the next financial crisis, cryptocurrencies or blockchain technology behind them, the challenges of economic migration, youth unemployment or caring for an ageing population, this is an opportunity for you and your media organisation to make a real difference in the myriad debates on the way forward.

The media, social or traditional, have the power to alienate ordinary people or make them part of the solution.

In a world dominated by headlines of fake news, this is an opportunity to step back and ask yourself a question that goes to the heart of journalism and the challenge of diversity and resilience in our rapidly changing world:

“How do I engage with an audience that does not want to engage with me?”
