Elizabeth Onyango

Senior Legal Programmes Advisor


Elizabeth Onyango joined the Thomson Reuters Foundation in December 2023 as Senior Legal Programmes Advisor. In this role, she is supporting the delivery of legal programming as part of TRF’s growing portfolio of funded projects and also overseeing the implementation of several projects.

Elizabeth has 20 years of experience in the international development and access to justice sectors in different parts of the African continent where she has overseen, managed and coordinated projects and initiatives. Prior to joining the Foundation, she was Chief Operations Officer at the International Law Institute – African Centre for Legal Excellence (ILI-ACLE) where she held numerous positions over many years, contributing to organizational direction and overseeing, managing and coordinating numerous learning programmes and projects. She has also had the opportunity to contribute to project evaluations and organizational reviews through her work with the Nairobi-based consultancy organization, Intermedia Development Consultants (iDC).

Elizabeth started off her career working with African Rights, a human rights and advocacy organization and her work focused on coordinating and taking part in research surrounding the 1994 Rwanda Genocide, particularly on justice, human rights and consequences.

Elizabeth holds an LL.M in international human rights law from the University of Essex and a LL.B from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
