Background/IRC Summary:  

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the largest humanitarian agencies in the world, providing relief, rehabilitation and post-conflict reconstruction support to victims of oppression and violent conflict. IRC has worked for over seven decades and today is involved in over 25 areas affected by conflict. We address both the immediate, life saving needs of conflict-affected people in an emergency and the reconstruction needs in post-conflict societies. The IRC is seeking an experienced professional with knowledge and experience in international project design and implementation with INGOs to provide technical support on economic activities that contribute to nutritional outcomes.

Job Overview/Summary:

The IRC Livelihoods and Nutrition Technical Advisor will provide strategic guidance to country teams on effective economic interventions to improve nutrition outcomes (include access to and availability of nutritious food, through cash transfer or by improving agricultural productivity) but might also contribute to things like recovery of treatment of MN (from cash transfers to address transport/distance) or low birth weight (by addressing maternal nutrition etc). They will work closely with IRCs Agricultural, Cash, Nutrition and Health Technical Advisors and other relevant technical units. The successful candidate will work in a range of focal countries, including Central African Republic, Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria and Somalia.  

Major Responsibilities:

The Technical Advisor will

  • Provide technical support and assistance to IRC field teams on improving the nutritional outcomes of people affected by crises, particularly women and children in the design, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of IRC economic activities.
  • Train country program coordinators and managers on the use of food and nutrition assessment tools and economic approaches that contribute to food and nutrition security outcomes.
  • Train and guide IRC teams on monitoring and evaluation tools including the identification and measurement of food and nutrition indicators and guidance on the collection of gender and age disaggregated data.
  • Act as lead spokesperson from the Economic Recovery and Development Unit on food and nutrition security issues across the organization, serving as a resource to IRC staff including external relations and advocacy departments. 
  • Represent IRC at external meetings and academic forums with donors, foundations, other non-governmental organizations, research institutions, inter-agency working groups linked to the Global Food Security cluster and other organizations such as TOPS, Spring, etc.

Job Requirements:

Education:  Master’s degree in public health nutrition, food security, agricultural economics, or related international development field and at least 5 years of relevant work in international nutrition and/or food security programs development.

Work Experience:

  • Experience in evidenced based economic approaches used to support food security and nutrition outcomes (i.e. agricultural production and marketing, income generation and livelihood support activities cash transfer programming).
  • Experience in research an asset

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to travel 20 – 40% of the time
  • Ability to write clear and effective communications and proposals

Language Skills:  French language skills required
