The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the largest humanitarian agencies in the world, providing relief, rehabilitation and post-conflict reconstruction support to victims of oppression and violent conflict. IRC has worked for over seven decades and today is involved in over 25 areas affected by conflict.   We address both the immediate, life saving needs of conflict-affected people in an emergency and the reconstruction needs in post-conflict societies.

 

Job Overview/Summary:

The Project Manager is responsible for the management of at least two strategic projects in the Child and Youth Protection and Development unit at the IRC.  These projects will result in the creation of the Safe Healing and Learning Spaces toolkit, social norms research related to child protection and the revision of IRC’s Healing Classrooms and Healing Families project materials.  This is a challenging position which requires strong organization skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well in a distributed, multicultural environment.  The position presents a unique opportunity for a skilled project manager to gain or strengthen his/her experience promoting education for and protection of children affected by war and crisis. 

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Complete all project planning and scheduling, from the high-level strategic planning phase to detailed short-term activity scheduling
  • Develop structured analysis of the return on investment to support senior decision-making
  • Drive and facilitate project governance, and coordinate with governance structures for other related projects
  • Support project Business Owners effectively, and ensure the goals and approach across technical workstreams are coordinated
  • Control project scope, and ensure that changes are rigorously mapped to the project return on investment
  • Oversee external consultative group (key NGOs and academics), coordinate and facilitate meetings, document outcomes, maintain regular communications 
  • Oversee third-party vendors, coordinate procurement and negotiations, track their progress, and proactively intervene on issues and risks with a firm hand
  • Drive project progress and coordinate the activities of cross-functional team members, including task and action tracking
  • Proactively manage and minimize project risks, dependencies, issues, gaps and resource conflicts
  • Ensure that project communications are timely, relevant and accurate, including regular status updates
  • Manage individual project budgets, track expenditure and maintain accurate projections
  • Support the project teams in their use of tools for documents management, collaboration and task management
  • Play a senior contributor role in the ongoing enhancement of the CYPD TU’s knowledge management, standard methodologies, assets and templates
  • Support the Sr Director on the overall organizational governance of the unit’s portfolio and on ongoing improvement of the unit’s project portfolio management methodology

 

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of progressive experience as a project manager
  • Strong leadership and motivation skills, with at least 4 years of experience in coordinating activities in a matrix reporting structure
  • Repeated experience in project managing large-scale, cross-functional projects
  • Business process analysis experience
  • Repeated experience in facilitating governance processes
  • Excellent writing, presentation and meeting facilitation skills
  • Vendor analysis and vendor management experience, including experience in multi-vendor projects
  • Outstanding skills in managing and reporting budgets
  • Experience in implementing or adapting project management methodologies, templates, tools and processes
  • High level of proficiency with MS Office, documents management solutions and project management tools

 

Working Environment:

  • Standard office work environment, some travel as needed
