Juba, South Sudan-with frequent cross-country travel

3-6 month placement

As our conscientious, diplomatic and highly qualified Surgeon you`ll be on the front-line of Save the Children`s emergency health service delivery, carrying out low-resourced major and minor trauma operations in South Sudan during escalations in violence.

Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Our Humanitarian department integrates emergency and development work, through our country programmes. It increases our capacity to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

As a pivotal part of our Emergency Health Unit, you`ll join an innovative pilot scheme aimed at providing surge personnel support to existing facilities during spikes in crisis, helping to ensure the achievement of health, nutrition, HIV, water sanitation and hygiene objectives. Leading on emergency surgical activities, you will also:

  • Ensure that pre and post-operative surgical care fully meets Save the Children`s policies, protocol and universal hygiene standards
  • Support rapid assessments of facilities and needs
  • Oversee clinical care in emergency rooms, surgical wards and operating theatres (focusing typically on soft tissue and bone injuries, but with occasional need for abdominal and chest interventions)
  • Lead on associated formal and informal training programmes, ensuring you meet targeted needs in an informative, practical and effective manner.

You will be a trauma surgeon with a UK / US recognised licence and speciality credentials, as well as a background supporting training and basic trauma care in an austere setting. Management experience supervising clinical teams, preferably in an emergency response scenario is also vital. You will additionally have:

  • A commitment to working in an accountable, accommodating and collaborative manner with a variety of partners of differing backgrounds and culture
  • Excellent communication skills, including an ability to develop clear and concise project reports
  • Patience, tact and flexibility, alongside a demonstrable talent for remaining focused, congenial and collaborative when working in challenging, sometimes insecure working environments
  • The ability to both directly implement and serve in an advisory capacity to achieve programme goals
  • Belief in the aims and principles of Save the Children, including a robust understanding of our mandate and child focus.

At Save the Children our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. If you share our mission, are passionate about making it happen  and strongly believe you can contribute then join us and we`ll give you every opportunity to succeed. We look forward to hearing from you.

This is a 3-6 month placement.
