Based in London, Salary: £40,000-£45,000 per annum

We are looking for a Health Adviser to play a key role in the successful design and implementation of Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) initiatives, as part of SCUK’s Health Strategy.

Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Our UK and Global Programmes department delivers humanitarian and development programmes, builds partnerships with institutional donors – including governments, multi-laterals and trusts – and drives lasting change. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

As Health Advisor, you will provide technical support for the design and delivery of projects within our health portfolio, focusing on maternal and newborn health. You will support the development of new programmes, provide quality assurance for existing work and strengthen the capacity of the country office teams and partner organisations, through both remote assistance and work in-country. Making a significant contribution to both Save the Children UK and Save the Children’s Movement wide priorities, you will support the delivery of SCUK’s 2016-18 health strategy. In addition, you will:

  • Provide technical support to country offices taking a leadership role in the design and delivery of MNH programmes, ensuring all aspects of the programme cycle have been carefully planned and quality assured to the highest level.
  • Be a point of reference and expertise within the health team for Maternal and Newborn Health.
  • Ensure both the supply and demand side are considered within programme design incorporating health system strengthening and social behaviour change communication approaches as appropriate.
  • Support country programmes to produce high quality and accurate project progress and evaluation reports that are submitted on time to donors
  • Consider the use of new technology and innovative ideas for improving MNH.
  • Support and mentor staff in priority countries in MNH.
  • Ensure that new projects and programmes include monitoring and evaluation systems that are robust, adequately resourced and able to generate cross cutting evidence.

To be successful you will have significant experience of developing and implementing MNH programmes in developing countries with an internationally recognised post graduate degree. Committed, experienced and motivated, you will have the ability to work on your own initiative, within an NGO environment. In addition, you will have:

  • Good programme management skills to ensure the successful delivery of programmes
  • Experience of working in MNH and of developing effective and influential working relationships with key stakeholders from donors, international organisations, NGOs and academics
  • The ability to analyse complex data in a technical area and to summarise and communicate this in ways that are accessible to a range of audiences and cultures
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills with the ability to think and plan strategically
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, with a proven ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals.
  • A background in midwifery, clinical education or neonatal nursing would be advantageous but not essential.

At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.

Our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. If you share our mission, are passionate about making it happen and strongly believe you can contribute then join us and we'll give you every opportunity to succeed. We look forward to hearing from you.
