The Operations Director, a senior Deputy-level position, will report directly to the National Director (ND). The Operations Director (OD) will lead a team of professional level staff to oversee operations for the large and complex Ethiopia National Office (NO). The OD will oversee field operations in integrated program areas as well as non-ADP and emergency response locations. The portfolio includes field operations; Sponsorship Management; Grant Operations; WASH Operations and Emergency Operations for a portfolio that in 2014 reached $85m.

SOME RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Provides strong day-to-day leadership of all operations in the National Office.
  • Leads the Grants Operations team and ensures strong cross-functional alignment with the technical and other teams for support of grant programs in the field. Ensure strong integration of grant programs within ADP and other program portfolios.
  • Requires strong cross-functional working relationships with Finance, Support Services and the Program Division for smooth operations and quick resolution of ‘red flag issues.’
  • Ensures strong response to emergencies, including external relations, development of appropriate strategies, structures, standards, placement of staff and resource management.
  • Ensures that detailed implementation plans are in place for all operations and that there is an effective system to track both plan against accomplishment as well as operational monitoring for effectiveness.
  • Ensures that communities, local institutions, government partners, and other NGOs are included in partnership at all times to ensure operations are responsive to the particular field context and aligned with Government of Ethiopia priorities.
  • Works closely with the Grant Acquisition Team on strengthening management (the ‘M’ in GAM) for projects captured. Monitors the entire grant management process and ensure proper compliance to donor requirements and regulations, including with sub-grant partners.
  • Supports efforts to ensure strong program impact assessments, documentation and sharing of best practices and lessons learned for all programs.
  • When appropriate supports the ND in external relations, building networks and linkages for WV within the country and with key stakeholders.
  • Acts as member of the Senior Leadership Team.

REQUIRED SKILLS INCLUDE:

  • Strong, tested skills managing complex operations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of all programming streams, including Sponsorship, Grants and Emergency Operations.
  • Diverse international relief and development experience across sectors.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing diverse staff groups.
  • Minimum of a Masters Degree in a relevant field.
  • At least 15 years of experience in increasingly more complex and senior leadership positions.
  • Experience in diverse relief and development contexts.
  • A high level of awareness of global, regional socio-economic and political issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in a culturally diverse context.
  • Strong oral and written English language skills.
  • External orientation – ability to engage externally with donors, partners, WV entities, etc. and represent the NO when required.
  • Travel: 25% domestic/international travel is required.
