Team Leader

Myanmar Now is an independent news service providing free, accurate and unbiased news to the people of Myanmar in Burmese and English. 

The website also offers free training and professional development resources for journalists in Myanmar.

In anticipation of a UNDEF-funded programme on investigative journalism, Myanmar Now is seeking an experienced Team Leader to manage this programme.

Programme Summary

The objective of the UNDEF-funded programme is to contribute to improved democracy and governance through quality investigative reporting. The programme will help better inform citizens on key areas of national importance including Peace building, women’s rights and land rights.

Scope of Work – Team Leader

The Team Leader (TL), based in Yangon, Myanmar is responsible for the overall delivery, editorial oversight and results of the programme. This is a national post with a media focus.  S/he should hold both technical and programme management responsibility whilst serving as the principal liaison with the UNDEF, implementing agencies. 

Key Tasks

The Team Leader will:

  • Be responsible for overall programme management including local engagement, strategic planning, policy engagement, and project troubleshooting.
  • Be reporting to the Chief Correspondent of Myanmar Now
  • Hold responsibility for editorial oversight and overall quality of stories
  • Lead programme networking and stakeholder outreach.
  • Supervise, manage, lead and oversee local staff working on the project.
  • Work with NGOs, media outlets, and CSOs to enhance engagement mechanisms and communication channels to implement investigative journalism projects.
  • Direct risk mitigation measures.
  • Manage a small team of journalists
  • Act as the lead interface with Myanmar Now – partner of TRF
  • Supported by the Office and Admin Manager, ensure project finances and management practices are in compliance with UNDEF contractual rules and procurement regulations.
  • Act as primary point of contact with Myanmar Now on programme implementation, budget, and team management.

Deliverables

The TL holds ultimate responsibility for project delivery and results. S/he will:

  • Provide senior level leadership and management in order to motivate the team to deliver a successful programme.
  • Ensure delivery of all contractual deliverables in all programme
  • Provide timely and accurate technical and financial reporting to editorial
  • Take overall responsibility for all internal reporting systems including quarterly project reviews.
  • With the support of the Office and Admin Manager, hold ultimate project budget oversight, tracking and management to ensure programme

Qualifications/Competencies:

  • Experience leading investigative journalism programmes
  • Experience of programme implementation in South Asia preferable.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in senior management positions in journalism related programmes
  • Fluency in English and high level of spoken Burmese as well as excellent writing skills in Burmese required
  • Programme strategy development experience, including work planning and activity budgeting
  • Familiarity with Project management tools and monitoring (milestone planning, results framework, logframes, etc)
  • Long-term experience working with donors such as DFID, World Bank, UN advantageous
  • Strong skill set in reporting and monitoring and evaluation
  • Strong presentational skills required
  • Technical expertise in journalism and media development.

Indicative start date: January 2017
Project Duration: 2 years
Salary commensurable with experience
