Do you have what it takes to help shape the future of Oxfam’s campaigns, global policy and public image?

The role

This is an exciting and challenging role at the heart of a dynamic and diverse international organisation with real campaigning and policy muscle.

This newly-created position is a chance to play a leadership role in Oxfam’s  humanitarian advocacy and campaigning work. You will be deputising for the Head of Humanitarian Policy and Campaigns, as well as managing at least two policy advisors and a campaigns manager.

Primarily, you will be helping to build an even stronger and more effective Humanitarian Policy & Campaigns Team. You will plan and manage resources, in addition to providing specialist advice on conflict and humanitarian issues across the whole organisation. The role could see you involved in supporting and leading campaigns on global and European refugee and migration issues, conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, or disasters like El Nino and the Nepal earthquake, as well as reform of the humanitarian system, upholding international humanitarian law and arms control..

You will help develop a long-term vision and action plan for Oxfam’s global policy and campaigns, alongside leading and supporting campaign strategy planning. This will include oversight of campaign and communications strategies and materials.

While much of the role is internally focused, there is also a strong external component to the job. You will represent Oxfam corporately and help manage, influence and build significant external relations with key targets and allies, including major bodies such as the UN, Foreign Office and DFID. In addition, there will be opportunities for global travel in support of our country-based teams and partners.

What we are looking for

This is undoubtedly a challenging role and, as such, will require someone with a rare combination of experience and skills.

Direct line management experience is vital, as is having previously worked in complex environments. You need to demonstrate that you can understand, meet and manage expectations across a large, diverse and global organisation like Oxfam. The role will also require you to undertake distance management as many of your contacts will be internationally based.

Strong conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills are a must, as is a strong knowledge of current conflict, humanitarian and security issues.

As you will be an essential part of an existing experienced and high- performing team, you must be able to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels. You should also demonstrate high-level interpersonal, influencing and diplomatic skills along with an awareness of political sensitivities, including the constraints of UK Charity Law.

You should be level headed and work well under pressure, being able to prioritise effectively and bring sound judgement when making difficult decisions.  However, we are looking for more than just a safe pair of hands. We are seeking someone who is not afraid to take risks to push things forward and who will actively look for opportunities for positive change both up and down the operational structure.

In return, you’ll be in a job where no two days are the same, where you will be an integral part of a dedicated, enthusiastic and supportive team, and where you will have the scope to shape your role your way. You will also be exposed to all aspects of Oxfam’s work – often firsthand, as travel opportunities are frequent, so you need to be flexible enough to work abroad for short periods of time.

If you have the drive, skills and experience to embrace such a significant and high profile role, and help us achieve our goal of ending global poverty, we want to hear from you.
