Human Resources and Administration Manager – Kurdistan, Iraq

Fixed Term – 12 months

The total salary package for this position is £37,384 - £40,972 including basic salary, hardship allowance and a cost of living allowance

About MAG:

MAG saves lives and builds futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury for civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development. MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our work to ban landmines. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict.

About the Iraq Programme:

Following decades of conflict, Iraq is heavily contaminated with landmines and other unexploded ordnance (UXO) and the ongoing regional crisis has added to the scale of this problem. MAG has been working in Iraq since 1992 and after a rapid expansion into new areas over the past 12 months; we currently have over 650 national staff and 90 teams operating in six areas in northern Iraq. By clearing hazardous areas, MAG has enabled new schools, roads and hospitals to be built, opened up vital trade routes and allowed communities to use their farming land in safety, giving them greater food security and an escape from poverty. Most recently, our work has supported the safe expansion or establishment of camps for displaced people and clearance of areas of return, as well as delivering life-saving risk education for those fleeing the violence.

About the role:

MAG is looking to appoint an HR and Administration Manager to join its programme in Northern Iraq at a time of rapid expansion. You will support the senior management team to develop and implement effective HR initiatives and strengthen the HR function, including employee relations, recruitment, reward and learning and development.  You will provide HR Management and strategic support to the country SMT to ensure a strategic approach to HR issues as well as compliance with local labour laws and promote good management practice, strengthening HR capacity throughout the programme. You will also be responsible for managing the administration function, which will include assisting in the NGO registration for expansion into other areas of Iraq, including Baghdad.

About you:

The HR Manager will be based in Erbil, but will travel regularly to operational bases and may be required to travel to Southern Iraq including Baghdad. The successful candidate will need previous experience of delivering HR services in an international NGO ideally in the Middle East, operating in insecure environments.  You will also need experience of implementing a wide range of effective HR policies, procedures and projects. You will work closely with the team in-country and remotely with HR colleagues at HQ and you will therefore need to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, negotiation and problem solving skills with a pragmatic approach to your work.
