We are looking for a highly experienced and active Protection Coordinator who can support the implementation of DRC’s protection programmes in South Sudan.

Since the outbreak of violence in South Sudan in December 2013, fighting has continued despite several attempts at a peace agreement. Currently 1.4 million people have been displaced from their homes and tens of thousands killed. 95,000 civilians are currently seeking refuge inside UNMISS bases across the country. DRC has been working, since the start of the crisis, providing camp management in three locations, Bentiu in Unity State, Malakal and Melut in Upper Nile states. In addition to this, DRC is managing refugee camps in Ajoung Thok, Unity State and Maban, Upper Nile State, as well as a food security and livelihoods programme in Northern Bahr-el Ghazal.
About the job
The Protection Coordinator reports to the Head of Programme. The Protection Coordinator has a technical management line to expat protection field staff (senior protection officer/protection manager where that arrangement exists).
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure programme quality in protection programming across the program and provide guidance/support to timely protection deliverables
- Provide oversight of technical aspects of protection staff’s work and identify training needs
- Quality assurance of protection donors reports
- Lead/support on proposals developed in area of protection
- Provide inputs to, and advocate for, mainstreaming protection in proposals and interventions
- Where possible attend national and state level protection clusters as well as other protection related meetings; respond to requests for information from protection cluster and related sub-clusters
- Maintain up to date knowledge of protection issues in South Sudan in particular as related to the current crisis and share this information with teams and senior management as appropriate
- Provide technical advice on planning assessments; participate in protection assessments as needed
- Identify protection gaps and opportunities for DRC interventions
- Lead on recruitment of expat protection staff and support recruitment of national staff where this cannot be done by field teams.
About you
To be successful in this role you must have the following essential competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, post graduate degree in protection an asset
- 5-8 years of protection programming experience gained in developing countries and crisis settlings, experience working in camp settings particularly welcome
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent inter-personal skills and proven ability to negotiate with a wide range of people (internally and externally)
- Strong coordination and organisational skills
- Ability to represent the organisation at protection fora
- Ability to adapt to the harsh and stressful working conditions of South Sudan and the size of programme
- Experience of delivering trainings welcomed
- Fluency in English.
Conditions:
Availability:January 2015
Duty station: Juba, with considerable travel to field sites, (non-family duty station)
Contract:6 months (with possibility of extension, subject to funding and performance)
