We are looking for an experienced and influential individual to join us as Head of Evidence, ensuring that the Network has the necessary feedback systems to enable an awareness of its emergence, results and impact.

The Start Network is made up of 42 aid agency members across five continents, ranging from large international organisations to national NGOs. Our aim is to deliver more effective emergency aid, harnessing the power and knowledge of the network to make faster and better decisions to help people affected by crises. We advocate radical change in the system so that the world can deal better with the humanitarian challenges of today, and of the future.

Our work focuses on three areas to change the system:

  • Localisation: We believe a more balanced system, that shifts power to those closest to the front line will generate more effective and appropriate responses for people affected by crises.
  • New forms of financing: We believe that by understanding the risks we face and providing fast, early, and dependable funding, we can: 1) help communities to become better prepared and more resilient to crises, 2) help civil society organisations be more effective, and 3) we can mobilise new resources for humanitarian action
  • Collective innovation: We believe that new ways of working are needed to tackle the challenges we face. By innovating collectively, we can share expertise, insights and perspectives to shape a more effective humanitarian system.

The Start Network is currently hosted by Save the Children (StC) UK on behalf of all member agencies and is working towards independent status in 2018, spinning off what will become the Start Platform.  This role will be hired into Save the Children and then transfer to the Platform at the point of independence.

As Head of Evidence, you will ensure that stakeholders not only have information they need to understand the balue of working collaboratively, but also have information they can trust. You will also lead the development and implementation of the Evidence strategy for the Start Network, including the Start research agenda. In addition you will:

  • Be accountable for consistent, coherent and practical MEAL tools and approaches
  • Develop and maintain processes that gather inputs and feedback from the Start Networks key stakeholders, including members, partners and donors
  • Consolidate all evidence generated across Start activities and initiatives and ensure the Network is able to articulate impact at programme, network and system level
  • Work closely with the Head of Brand, Communications and Digital to ensure pertinent evidence generated by the Start team is shared across the network.

To be successful you will have significant experience of creating & implementing new and innovative MEAL tools and approaches. Excellent networking and relationship management skills are essential, as is a demonstrable understanding of quality, effectiveness and accountability initiatives in the humanitarian sector. In addition you will have:

  • Experience of leading complex Monitoring and Evaluation, Research or Evidence function
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to deal tactfully and sensitively with a wide range of people
  • Experience of promoting collaborative approaches for cross- and inter- organisational learning
  • Proven negotiation and influencing skills.

At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.

If you share our belief in the power of children, join the fight. It takes relentless determination, creativity and a real commitment to real change. Because every child should be able to make their mark on their world, and help to build a better future. We look forward to hearing from you.
