Gakii Mbae

Winfred Gakii Mbae joined the Thomson Reuters Foundation in November 2021 to offer specialist media freedom and to implement a new media freedom project focused on East and Southern Africa.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Gakii worked as Programme Officer- Civic Space at ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa where she led ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa’s efforts to promote an enabling legal and policy environment for freedom of expression and access to information in the region. Gakii also worked as Researcher for the former Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa, where she built expertise on key freedom of expression and media freedom human rights issues across the continent.

Gakii is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with an LL. B from the University of Nairobi and currently pursuing her LL.M in Disability Rights in Africa at the University of Pretoria- South Africa.
