AI use and best practices

Our guides help journalists and newsrooms harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) while protecting editorial independence, public trust and individuals’ rights.

AI offers new possibilities for journalists and newsrooms but also new risks they can’t afford to ignore.

The rapid development of AI is transforming the way news is produced, distributed and consumed. This creates new possibilities for journalists and newsrooms, but it also raises ethical, legal and professional challenges. Newsrooms need legal clarity around AI use so that they can apply these new tools confidently and responsibly.

This collection includes three guides outlining the legal and ethical frameworks relevant to journalists and newsrooms – one focused on Argentina, one on Uruguay, and one covering both Tanzania and Kenya.

Each guide is designed to help media outlets mitigate legal risk and build resilience as they integrate AI in their own work. The guides are grounded in the specific legal and regulatory context of each country covered.

The collection also includes a case book highlighting practical examples of what six small and mid-size newsrooms built, tested and learned throughout their AI adoption process – helping other newsrooms weigh what AI could do for their team and build on those findings.
