Global supply chains under growing pressure
Global supply chains are currently facing structural pressure: new due diligence laws, rising geopolitical tensions, and increased buyer scrutiny means that Malaysia’s export industries – especially suppliers – must now clearly demonstrate how they manage labour practices.
Renewed forced labour regulations are rapidly reshaping this landscape. From U.S. import restrictions to the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), coming into effect from 2028, buyers, investors, and regulators now expect credible, data-driven evidence of how workforce risks are identified and mitigated. At the same time, Malaysia’s evolving trade and policy landscape including renewed momentum around the EU-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as well as national commitments on labour protections through the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights are increasing expectations for alignment with international standards, particularly on responsible business conduct and human rights.
For many Malaysian businesses and suppliers, this creates a complex and fragmented compliance environment. Multiple overlapping frameworks, standards, and reporting expectations can be difficult to interpret and operationalise effectively.
Navigating a complex compliance landscape
The Workforce Due Diligence Tool (WDDT) – a self-assessment survey to evaluate your company’s workforce compliance and potential risks – and the accompanying training address this challenge through practical and measurable guidance. The WDDT consolidates requirements across global and national frameworks into actionable indicators; together with the comprehensive training, they enable suppliers to systematically identify and prioritise workforce risks and generate credible data to support various types of data disclosure frameworks.
Training structure and commitment
This programme is composed of three phases, combining an in-person session, independent self-assessment modules, and a closing online seminar over a three-month period. Through the training, participants will learn how to collect and interpret workforce data, prioritise interventions based on risk, and use the WDDT periodically to assess compliance risk. The programme is largely self-paced and centred on self-assessment, designed to accommodate busy schedules.
- Phase 1: 9 September 2026 One-day, in-person training workshop
- Phase 2: September to November 2026 Guided self-completion of the WDDT with the aid of asynchronous modules
- Phase 3: November 2026 Structured online seminar of 2 hours to share findings and outcomes. The date and time will be communicated closer to the date of the seminar.
The in-person training programme follows a practical, implementation-focused structure (please see Agenda Section on Eventbrite registration page for more details).
Participants are expected to engage throughout and apply learnings internally to complete the process. Training is delivered by Thomson Reuters Foundation experts on Responsible Business alongside a legal specialist on global and national HRDD laws.
