The Thomson Reuters Foundation’s feature story “Forget Davos; Dandora holds the key to inequality – activists” published on January 24, 2018 was republished extensively by Kenyan media outlets such as the Business Daily and The Star.
Activists fighting for an end to inequality at the Dandora slum – a massive dump site which is Nairobi’s principle rubbish collection site – took to social media to post a picture of them holding up the article as part of their campaign to draw attention to the lives of the residents who live in impoverished conditions.
The campaigners in the picture include one of the Kenya’s most famous hip hop stars Juliani who was born and brought up in Dandora and who uses his music to create awareness on social issues such as poor governance, violence against women, corruption and poverty. He also widely shared the story with his almost a quarter of a million followers on Twitter.
