The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism

The RISJ, which we co-founded in 2006 with the University of Oxford, is dedicated to exploring and supporting the future of journalism worldwide.

About

We provide core funding for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ), one of the world’s most powerful and respected centers producing high-impact research and driving journalism excellence. Its work is anchored in the recognition of the key role of independent media in open societies and the power of information in the modern world.

Our funding enables the production of core resources, including the Institute’s flagship Digital News Report, and helps to support its journalist and leadership programmes, as well as its events.

Overview

The RISJ was set up to reflect the Foundation’s values and commitment to strengthening independent journalism as integral to upholding free, fair and informed societies. Our financial assistance facilitates the Institute’s work in bringing together practice and research, with the ultimate goal of helping the profession navigate the multiple challenges of a changing media environment.

Through research and exchange of global expertise, and by hosting and driving conversations around the future of news, the RISJ works to ensure that journalists, editors and media executives are empowered to help build a better and more sustainable journalism for tomorrow.

Key highlights

Core Institute activities include the Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) funded Journalism Fellowship Programme, which we established in 1983. The programme brings high calibre mid-career journalists to Oxford, offering them the space and opportunity to carry out media-based research and to publish their findings.

Over the past four decades, we have sponsored over 200 Fellows from more than 60 countries, providing journalists with unparalleled opportunities to learn about trends, issues and challenges affecting the industry, focus on their projects, and form lasting relationships with their peers. In 2023 the Foundation supported 10 Fellows from across the globe. They join a cohort of journalists from all over the world who are connected with professional peers and leading academics from a wide range of different fields.
