Conservation in Colombia

“We are very thankful to TrustLaw for providing us with such valuable legal resources to improve our conservation work to secure a long-term future for the cute little cotton-top tamarins. On behalf of our team, thank you!”

Rosamira Guillen, Executive Director, Fundación Proyecto Tití – Colombia.

Cotton-top tamarins, known locally as “titís”—are widely recognised for their shock of white tufted hair and cheeky demeanour; but perhaps lesser known is that they are also among the most endangered primates in the world.

Since 1985, local Colombian non- profit Fundación Proyecto Tití, has been raising  awareness on the preservation of the cotton-top tamarin and training local community advocates to promote conservation efforts in their community. According to Proyecto Tití, Colombia harbours a greater concentration of animal species per unit area than any other country, but is also among the top ten countries in terms of ongoing deforestation, losing more than 4000 sq km annually. Titís, only found in north-western Colombia, are victims of this deforestation with their tropical forest habitat being threatened. “The cotton-top tamarin is endangered because the forest is disappearing, due to human activities” says Rosamira Guillen, Executive Director, Fundación Proyecto Tití – Colombia.

Proyecto Tití campaigns for the protection of titís, using them as the flagship species to promote the conservation of Colombia’s natural resources“Making the conservation of natural habitats and resources economically feasible for local communities will insure the survival of not only the cotton-top tamarin, but the native flora and fauna of Colombia,” the organisation says.

In 2015, Proyecto Tití became a member of TrustLaw, the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s free global pro bono service. The non-profit sought assistance on a range of legal issues, including liability waivers and the registration of a protected forest reserve in Colombia’s national system.

Through TrustLaw, the legal team at Holland & Knight and the in-house legal team at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise helped Proyecto Tití to register a reserve in Colombia’s protected areas, ensuring the safety of titís and allowing the organisation to educate local school children and adults about the environment and the threats the forests face from deforestation. Registering the reserve further established Proyecto Tití as a conservation organization and a reliable partner for governmental and funding organisations. The pro bono legal assistance empowered Proyecto Tití to strengthen their brand and thereby increase their opportunities to form effective partnerships, contribute to forest conservation and make an impact in their community.

“We have learned that long-term permanence generates more trust when conducting community work, and to us it is important that communities feel trust and motivation to participate in our community initiatives to reduce the unsustainable use and exploitation of forest resources for cotton-tops. Owning a reserve is a good indicator of our intention to stay and provide effective partnerships with the locals.” Rosamira Guillen, Executive Director, Fundación Proyecto Tití – Colombia.

Conservación in Colombia
