Understanding the legal mechanisms available for migrants and asylum seekers in American countries is of paramount importance, given Venezuela’s current migration and refugee crisis and the recent border restrictions implemented due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
TrustLaw, the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global pro bono service, connected Un Mundo Sin Mordaza with law firms in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and the United States to develop research on the general laws governing migration and asylum. The report specifically addressed the legal provisions in place for Venezuelan citizens to migrate or seek asylum in these host countries.
This report is a valuable tool that contains a comparative overview of the legal requirements and procedures migrants and asylum seekers should follow to legally stay in the country of reception or regularize their situation. It also mentions the current restrictions implemented in the different countries due to the pandemic. We thank the valuable contributions made by Robalino Abogados; Foley Hoag LLP; Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados; Morales, Besa y Cía Ltda; Philippi Prietocarrioza Ferrero DU & Uría; and Richards, Cardinal, Tutzer, Zabala & Zaefferer to this project.
