AI use and best practices model policy for newsrooms – Uruguay

This practical guide provides newsrooms in Uruguay with a model policy for the responsible, ethical and legally informed use of artificial intelligence. With AI tools now widely used across journalism, and many media organisations still without internal guidance, this guide helps address the need for clear and consistent safeguards..

Designed to be adapted to each organisation’s editorial structure and needs, this resource sets out guidance on:

  • human oversight
  • transparency
  • labelling of AI-assisted and synthetic content
  • data protection
  • intellectual property
  • bias mitigation
  • incident response

This document is one of two guides, with this version dedicated to Uruguay and a corresponding Argentina‑specific guide published separately. Developed for newsrooms in both Argentina and Uruguay, these guides are grounded in each country’s legal framework but can be adapted to any other jurisdiction.

They aim to help journalists and media organisations harness AI’s potential while safeguarding editorial independence, public trust, privacy and the rights of individuals.

These resources have been developed along with law firms ECIJA Argentina and ECIJA Uruguay, with The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation’s support.
